Agni: the centre of Ayurvedic health

Ayurveda places digestion at the heart of wellbeing. Agni, the digestive fire, transforms food into nourishment. When agni is balanced, digestion feels comfortable and regular; when it is weak or irregular, the classical texts describe heaviness, bloating and sluggishness.

Kitchen spices with a long tradition

  • Jeera (cumin), Saunf (fennel) and Ajwain (carom): everyday seeds used in cooking and after meals.
  • Hing (asafoetida): a pinch in lentils and vegetables.
  • Pippali, Kali Mirch and dry ginger: together known as Trikatu, the “three pungents”.
  • Pudina (mint): a cooling after-meal herb.

Triphala: three fruits in balance

Triphala combines amla, haritaki and bibhitaki in equal parts. It is one of the most widely used classical formulations, traditionally taken at night with warm water to support regular digestion.

Eating habits that support digestion

  • Eat the largest meal at midday, when agni is traditionally considered strongest.
  • Eat warm, freshly cooked food and avoid overeating.
  • Sip warm water rather than iced drinks with meals.
  • Leave about three hours between dinner and bed.

If digestive discomfort is persistent or severe, see a doctor.
