Beauty from within

Ayurveda links the health of the skin and hair to digestion, sleep and the balance of the doshas, particularly pitta, the dosha of heat and transformation. Clear-looking skin is traditionally seen as a reflection of good internal balance, so skin care starts with diet and routine.

Herbs traditionally used for the skin

  • Manjistha: a red root regarded as one of the foremost herbs for the complexion.
  • Neem: a bitter, cooling leaf used inside and on the skin.
  • Haldi (turmeric): used in food and in traditional face packs.
  • Anantmool (Sariva) and Khair (Khadira): cooling herbs in classical skin formulations.
  • Aloe vera: its gel is a classic soothing application.

For the hair

Amla, brahmi and bhringraj are the classic hair herbs, used both internally and in oils massaged into the scalp. Regular oiling (shiro abhyanga) is a traditional weekly ritual.

Daily habits

  • Drink enough water and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Limit very spicy, fried and fermented foods if your skin is sensitive to heat.
  • Sleep regularly; Ayurveda associates late nights with aggravated pitta.
