Rasayana: the Ayurvedic approach to ageing well

One of the eight branches of Ayurveda, rasayana, is devoted to rejuvenation and healthy longevity. It combines nourishing herbs and foods with daily routine, ethical living and a calm mind, a practice the classical texts call achara rasayana.

Classic rasayanas

  • Amla: the base of Chyawanprash, one of the most famous rasayana preparations.
  • Ashwagandha and Shatavari: nourishing roots.
  • Giloy: called Amrita in Sanskrit.
  • Brahmi: for the mind.
  • Arjuna: traditionally used to support heart health.
  • Haritaki: one of the three fruits of Triphala.

Daily practice

Gentle daily exercise such as walking or yoga, warm cooked food, oil massage, staying socially connected and keeping the mind active are all part of the rasayana tradition. Supplements support these habits, not replace them.

Older adults often take several medicines, so speak to a doctor before adding any herbal supplement.
