How Ayurveda thinks about everyday stress

Ayurveda describes health as a state of balance between body, mind and senses. Busy schedules, irregular meals and late nights are seen as forces that unsettle this balance, especially vata, the dosha of movement, which governs the nervous system and the mind. When vata runs high, the classical texts describe restlessness, scattered attention and poor sleep.

The traditional response is not a single remedy but a rhythm: regular mealtimes, warm, nourishing food, a consistent bedtime, gentle movement and time outdoors. Herbs are used to support that rhythm, not replace it.

Herbs traditionally used

  • Ashwagandha: the best-known rasayana root, traditionally used to support strength and a calm response to everyday stress.
  • Brahmi and Shankhpushpi: medhya herbs associated with mental clarity and a settled mind.
  • Jatamansi: an aromatic root traditionally used to support relaxation.
  • Tulsi: holy basil, taken daily as tea in many households.

Building a steady daily routine

Ayurveda calls a daily routine dinacharya. Simple practices include waking and sleeping at similar times, a few minutes of slow breathing in the morning, eating the main meal at midday, and switching off screens an hour before bed. Herbal supplements are most often taken after meals, with warm water or milk.

A note on expectations

Rasayana herbs are traditionally taken consistently over weeks, as part of a lifestyle, rather than for quick effects. If stress is affecting your sleep, work or relationships, speak to a doctor or a qualified counsellor.
