Herbal supplements are natural products, and like any natural product they change over time. How you store them makes a real difference to how long they stay at their best.

The four enemies: heat, light, air and moisture

Heat

High temperatures speed up the breakdown of natural compounds in herbs. Most herbal products should be kept below 25 °C. Avoid leaving them in a car, on a windowsill or next to the stove.

Light

Direct sunlight can fade powders and affect sensitive compounds. Opaque or dark containers help, as does keeping the jar in a cupboard.

Air

Every time a jar is opened, fresh air and humidity get in. Close the lid tightly straight after use.

Moisture

Powders and capsules absorb moisture from the air, which can cause clumping, softening and, in the worst case, mould. Keep supplements away from the bathroom and the kitchen sink, and never put a wet spoon into a jar.

Should I refrigerate them?

Usually not. The fridge is humid, and taking a cold jar into a warm room causes condensation inside. Unless the label says otherwise, a cool, dry cupboard is best.

What about the desiccant sachet?

Many jars contain a small sachet that absorbs moisture. Leave it in the jar until it is finished, and do not eat it.

Storing shilajit resin

Shilajit resin responds to temperature. In warm weather it becomes soft and sticky; in cool weather it hardens. Both are normal. Keep the jar tightly closed and always use a clean, dry spoon.

Check the dates

Every product should carry a manufacturing date and an expiry or best-before date. Use the product within that period, and within any “use within” period after opening if the label gives one.

Signs a product has deteriorated

  • A musty or unusual smell
  • Visible mould or discolouration
  • Capsules that have become sticky, soft or cracked
  • Powder that has formed hard lumps

If you notice any of these, do not use the product.

Keep out of reach of children

Store all supplements where children and pets cannot reach them, in their original labelled containers.
