Strength in Ayurveda

Ayurveda describes three kinds of strength (bala): the strength you are born with, the strength that comes with age and season, and the strength you build through food, rest and exercise. Rasayana herbs are traditionally used to support the third kind.

Herbs traditionally used

  • Shilajit: a purified mineral resin described in classical texts as a rasayana for stamina.
  • Ashwagandha: for strength and vitality.
  • Safed Musli: a nourishing tuberous root.
  • Shatavari: a cooling, nourishing tonic.
  • Khajur (dates) and nourishing seeds: energy-giving foods.

Foundations first

Lasting energy starts with sleep, regular meals that include protein and whole grains, daily movement and time outdoors. Ayurveda also recommends matching exercise to your capacity, stopping at about half your full effort.

Persistent tiredness can have medical causes, such as low iron or thyroid changes. If you feel exhausted for more than a few weeks, see a doctor.
